On September 12, the Design Matters lecture series features landscape architecture Professors Chip Sullivan (UC Berkeley) and Elizabeth Boults (UC Davis) who will speak on (a history of) re-imagining landscapes as places including urban streets and leftover spaces.

Drawn from the Field: Representing Landscapes of the Western Imagination

Chip and Elizabeth will begin this presentation on the history, theory, and application of field sketching and landscape scenography with a short introduction of their backgrounds as artists, educators and authors. They will then present an overview of the history of the sketchbook as a tool for investigation, documentation, and creativity – an imaginative jaunt through the notebooks of Leonardo Da Vinci and Vincent Van Gogh, Joseph Grinnell and Larry Halprin, onward to the contemporary creative scene and the craze of the “Moleskine.”

They will next examine the tools and techniques used by artists, scientists, cartoonists, writers, architects and landscape architects to record their ideas. Elizabeth and Chip will take listeners on a personal journey into their own creative process, from brainstorming and concept development to the realization of completed projects. Particular emphasis will be on documenting regional landscapes – western US and Canada.

The potential of the field sketchbook as an aid to the creative process is unlimited, whether used as a travel journal, diary, sketchbook, or for watercolor painting and visual notetaking. The sketchbook is a sanctuary for intuition, exploration, and invention; the speakers will explain how one can use drawing to create one’s own personal haven for creativity and exploration.
