Enhancing Safety and Estimating Scope 3 Emissions Associated with Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Waste, and Water Use

While the “digitalization” of oil and gas industry has been talked about for decades, actual adoption of digital technologies in the industry has often lagged other sectors. Given the current challenges of COVID-19 pandemic, a global recession, and a world oil price collapse, increasingly oil and gas companies are now considering digital solutions to gain efficiencies. Also, given the consistent increase in pressure from investors, customers, employees, and numerous other stakeholders to increase transparency on sustainable and socially responsible practices, articulated through Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting, it is now important to estimate Scope 3 emissions. Such emissions related to transportation are extremely tedious to calculate based on paper forms. EnviroApps has developed a Management System (ez2Track) that includes an automated process to estimate Scope 3 emissions for ESG Reporting, effortlessly.

Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) Regulations currently require a physical paper shipping document to follow most dangerous goods while they are in transport. Shipping documents include information on the dangerous goods being transported and give first responders the information they need to respond to incidents when they occur. Unfortunately, paper documents can be lost or destroyed, which can cause delays in emergency response. Solving such a challenge requires multi-industry sector collaboration and regulatory change. One such initiative that aims to facilitate the advancement of environmental digital solutions within the transport sector is Transport Canada’s Regulatory Sandbox Project.

EnviroApps is the first company to offer a paperless solution for Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) shipping documents and our solution has been in use by Trimac Transportation and Tourmaline Oil since September, 2020.

Similarly, since January 2015, the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) has allowed the use of electronic Alberta Oilfield Waste Form to meet the requirement of full cycle tracking of hazardous waste. Most energy companies still use paper-based forms and manual systems to track their hazardous waste despite the inherent risks associated with data integrity and data loss, duplication of effort between field personnel and Environmental Co-ordinators and poor visibility of the information. Given the increase in remediation activity because of government grants, it is now more important to consider efficiencies in waste tracking.

EnviroApps offers an efficient and proven, paperless solution which replaces paper forms that are currently being used to track transportation of dangerous goods, waste and water use. This applies to hundreds of thousands of paper documents. Imagine the extent of efficiencies that can be gained by avoiding paperwork, filing, storage (minimum 2 years) costs, not to mention enhancement of safety through legibility and accuracy of information. Paper forms cost $20-40 per document, so savings can be substantial.

The Presentation will focus on results from Case Studies based on real data from our clients that reveals the low hanging fruits of productivity, cost saving opportunities and ease of estimating Scope 3 emissions for ESG Reporting. We will also share learnings from the TDG Regulatory Sandbox Project as collectively our informal industry collaborative group is first to achieve equivalency for road transportation of dangerous goods.
