Topic: The Application of Geophysical Methods and Remote Sensing for Environmental Site Characterization Studies

This presentation will discuss how geophysical methods are used to map the shallow sub-surface and, thus be a very cost-effective tool for Environmental Site Assessments. Some of the advantages of geophysical methods as a part of a site investigation include the relatively low cost, non-intrusiveness, and collection of real-time data. Methods include Electromagnetics (EM), Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT), Magnetics, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), and downhole borehole logging. These methods have been effectively utilized at a wide variety of locations for applications such as:

  • detection of buried drilling sumps, flare pits, and landfill cells
  • delineation of impacts related to pipeline breaks
  • monitoring remedial efforts
  • identifying downhole feature such as fractures and lithology
  • shallow geological mapping (e.g., depth to bedrock, fractures)

AKS Geoscience also provides aerial imagery from satellite and UAVs/Drones. UAV Imagery is used to generate detailed site condition maps, digital elevation models, and 3D “google-like” street views. In addition, AKS Geoscience has employed high resolution, satellite based multispectral aerial imagery for advanced land classification analysis, such as mapping invasive species or wetlands.

Numerous case studies will be presented highlighting the applicability of each geophysical survey method.

AKS Geoscience Inc. is an independent firm comprised of geophysicists and engineers which has been providing geophysical expertise to the environmental and engineering community since 2000. AKS employs a full-suite of near-surface geophysical techniques to provide precise descriptions and images of the shallow subsurface, in a non-invasive manner. AKS has successfully completed over 6000 geophysical investigations in Western Canada, United States, South America, and Eastern Europe. With this depth of experience AKS provides a unique perspective to complex environmental and engineering problems. Common applications for near surface geophysical methods include:

  • Determining the horizontal and vertical extents of impacts related to industrial activities i.e., near surface contaminant plumes and zones.
  • Geological and soils mapping of the shallow-subsurface.
  • Locating buried metal objects such as tanks, infrastructure, and archaeological artifacts.

AKS incorporates support technologies such as High Resolution Multispectral Satellite Imagery, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (drones), and Geographical Information Systems into many of our programs. Support products such as digital elevation models, vegetation analysis, accurate ortho-imagery, and online data delivery provide tremendous additional value and bring clarity to many of the complex problems we work on.

In 2019 AKS completed 422 surveys for 85 individual clients. Since our inception we have participated in projects for over 300 companies and agencies. The culture at AKS is highly service-oriented and we realize that only by closely understanding the issues that our clients face are we able to retain the existing client base while achieving sustainable, organic growth.

Research and continuous product advancement is a cornerstone corporate philosophy at AKS. Over the past 10 years we have participated in several government sponsored research initiatives that have helped AKS develop additional product offerings and improve our core services. Our most recent research project concluded in 2019 and was titled Environmental Site Characterization and mapping of Oil/Gas Facilities using a Multispectral Sensor Mounted on an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle. This project was funded by the National Research Council, through the Industrial Research Assistance Program.


Speaker Bio

Anil K. Sharma, P.Geoph., President, AKS Geoscience Inc.

Mr. Anil Sharma is the Founder of AKS Geoscience Inc. Anil has provided geophysical consulting services to a wide variety of industries and government branches for over 30 years. He specializes in the application of geophysical methods for complex environmental and geotechnical problems. Anil has conducted and managed over 6000 geophysical investigations. Applications have included plume delineation, buried metal detection, geological mapping, and mineral exploration. He has been involved in international projects, including many in developing countries. 

Anil is well versed in the methods involved with near surface geophysics. These include: Electromagnetics, electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), ground penetrating radar (GPR), seismic refraction, wireline logging, and magnetics. Considerable experience has also been gained in various related disciplines, i.e., hydrogeology, geochemistry, soil sciences, environmental auditing and liability assessments, geographical information systems (GIS), groundwater and soil sampling.

In his current role, Anil manages the geophysics group At AKS. He directs the technical and professional staff in the conduct of geophysical investigations.
