Special Projects – River Cree Resort & Casino Embers Gaming Entertainment

This gaming entertainment expansion project takes inspiration from the natural patterns and dramatic textures of the surrounding First Nations landscape, creating a memorable guest journey and telling a story about cultural heritage through pattern, color, texture, light and ambiance.

The new destination contains over 400 slot games, 14 table games, a high-limit room, retail and food and beverage - all of which are smoke friendly for both cigar and cigarettes.

The client approached the design team with a challenge to create a state-of-the-art gaming environment designed to provide continuous fresh air exchange sufficient for 1650 smoking guests. Prior to developing this 25,000 square foot (2323 m2) addition, the resort had significant challenges managing air quality in the non-smoking balance of their casino.

The design team worked with an interdisciplinary approach to develop a technically rigorous design solution that integrates the air supply and exchange within the elegant column surrounds, lighting features, surveillance and ceilings.

The physical connections to the rest of the property are carefully planned to provide air locks for both front of house as well as back of house circulation. Significant air exchange is discretely integrated into custom millwork grilles and other design elements such that the space "breathes" very effectively but seamlessly with the luxury and sparkle of the surroundings..

Our custom geometric floral pattern for the wool axminster carpet adds luxurious vibrancy and recalls First Nations' beading and artistic traditions. This design is repeated in a perforated ceiling above the feature bar. Braided herringbone floor patterns anchor the flowing organic shapes with geometry of cultural relevance.

A deep grounding in nature is further reinforced with the use of natural materials and backlit onyx feature walls which create striking focal anchors and serve to direct and orient the guest.

Located in the center of the space, the table games ceiling sparkles with suspended faceted metal panels with integrated fiber optic lighting - these create a flowing shimmer on the ceiling intended to recall the dynamic undulation of the Aurora Borealis.

Superscale archival imagery adds a layer of authenticity and richness to the space and gestures toward the community's rich history.

This very successful gaming destination resonates with a specific guest and offers a unique, immersive and elevated guest experience. Most importantly, it celebrates resilience and pride in heritage for the First Nation community it serves.
