Ask Ida Q&A

Question - How do I find a mentor?

Answer - Mentoring can benefit us at all career stages. Pay attention to potential mentors who seem willing to explain things and have the experience or skills that you wish to acquire. In addition to senior interior designers, in or outside of your organization, they can also be people outside of your field, or even be your peers. Sometimes your supervisor can be your mentor; a mentor can also be a role model that we observe and mimic. Just like other relationships in our life, they can be organic where they happen naturally or sometimes we have to put an effort into it. If you have a potential mentor in mind, you could start by asking them for coffee or a short meeting. Keep trying until you find a mentor that clicks with you.

Mentoring relationships start with a good rapport or a connection. Mentors are usually willing to invest their time with a mentee who shows career potential and enthusiasm. A mentor’s top skills are being a good listener and asking  insightful questions that challenge your thinking and increase your self awareness, while. establishing trust. The mentee's top skills are eagerness to learn and grow by reflecting on what resonates with them. Be respectful of a mentor’s time and demonstrate that you’ve followed through on any leads they offered or tasks that you agreed to try.

Know that you will be able to mentor others one day and pay it forward.

The acoustic impact of a room size and shape.

The larger the room, the more surface area there is for sound to travel and reverberate making it echoey and harder to hear. The same goes with ceiling heights. For example, school classrooms are typically around 3 m high for optimal acoustics to help students hear their teacher from anywhere in the classroom. A band classroom is better around 4 m high for the music to reverberate.
A room's shape and ceiling angle impact sound travel. Angled side walls can help project the sound, such as in an auditorium or concert hall. Symmetry of the walls on each side is important to balance reflected sound to arrive at the listener at the same time. Angles in the ceiling also distort the path of sound. A concave ceiling focuses sound and a convex ceiling diffuses the sound.
