The presenters will highlight how, as mid-level managers, they built and implemented a professional fellowship program for student affairs and student service professionals on their campus to engage in intentional cross-departmental learning pathways that fostered career progression and competency advancement. Utilizing a mixture of content sharing and group discussion, the presenters will create a space in which attendees can explore how they can build intentional professional development opportunities like this within their own institutions.

Julia Heck, M.A., CO-OP® (she/her) - University Ombuds, Eastern Michigan University
LaMarcus D. Howard, Ph.D. (he/him) - Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (Student Health and Wellness) at North Carolina Central University
Julia Heck (she/her) serves as the University Ombuds at Eastern Michigan University and is a Certified Organizational Ombuds Practitioner (CO-OP®). Within this role, her primary purpose is to aid in transforming conflict into a productive force at an individual and organizational level. During a time of accelerated change within higher education, Julia's primary goal is to be a trusted navigator for students, faculty, staff, and administrators when engaging in constructive problem-solving, exploring options for navigating the institution, and utilizing a data-informed and lived-experience driven approach to sharing systems-level feedback with senior-level leaders to lead building a just, engaged, and inclusive educational community. With over a decade in higher education, her experience and skillsets span institutional policy and process design and revision, programmatic redesign and improvement, program evaluation and assessment, student retention and academic success initiatives, and student leadership programming. As a first-generation student and professional, and as a woman-identified millennial leader, she holds a personal life recipe of gratitude, kindness, and everything hopeful. She believes in the worthiness we all intrinsically hold and is an investor in the exponential potential of those who allow her to be a part of their life stories. She is pursuing her Ph.D. in Educational Leadership at EMU, and outside of work/school, she loves to get creative in the kitchen trying out new plant-based dessert recipes.
LaMarcus D. Howard (he/him), Ph.D., is the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (Student Health and Wellness) at North Carolina Central University. Dr. Howard leads Student Accessibility Services, University Counseling Center, Student Health Center, and the University Recreation Center at NCCU. The breadth of Dr. Howard’s higher education professional experience expands over a decade and ranges from the areas of student success, first-year experience, multicultural services, GEAR UP/College Day, academic advising, enrollment management, and disability access. His portfolio as an educational leader is foundationally built upon his values and commitment to continue building a comprehensive knowledge of higher education and student affairs principles, integrating best practices and innovative approaches that promote and ensure a healthy student-centered campus community.
